Good article on a very popular topic Kristian.

Totally agree with some of the comments as well. I had a book published on Facebook Statuses entitled ‘is: The Phenomenon of the Facebook Status’ (www.theisbook.com) and I have to admit that from working on this subject over the past few years, I would have to agree with a lot of what you said.

Good work Kristian I look forward to reading more of your stuff

An another point of wiev:

I don't use Facebook. I have no pressure to use it either, because none of my (few best) friends uses it either. To stay in touch with my friends, I have IRC running all the time when I only am at home.

WARNING!
Watching the aforementioned Muppets clip can result to the listener unavoidably and -stoppably humming the melody featured in the clip. No cure known to man as of yet, but a sufferer can try singing along to TV ad jingles for first aid. Side effects: merely thinking about the clip will cause the same effect. (Here we go... doo doo, do-do-doo..)

Still, it's quite funny. Can you take the consequences?

BTW, there was a story on the news last night that a teenager in Sweden started a group on FB to oppose street violence after his friend was beaten to death on the weekend. He started it on Monday and it already has 70,000 people signed up. The group is planning a demonstration that is expected to gather 10,000 participants. I guess FB does have some positive potential after all.

I agree that Facebook has a frightening tendency to eat up time. On the other hand, there have always been pleanty of opportunities for procrastination before FB took over. I for one have spent far too much time that I should have been putting to productive use playing patience or minesweeper, not to mention reading various blogs...

Good article, Kristian. I'm a recent convert to Facebook, after living in denial for months and just wondering where all my friends have gone. They were, naturally, in Facebook all day long.

So I took a bite of the cake and now I'm hooked. I'm proud that I've managed to live without most of the silly applicaitons, but I found friends from England with whom I went to school in 1991 in the quaint little town of Camberley, Surrey, and I was overjoyed. I've found friends from so far in my past that I couldn't have done the same using any "traditional" means.

To me Facebook has become just that: a way of reaching friends that you'd have a hard time finding using the conventional means. Also, it's a great place to reacquaint yourself with people you've stayed out of touch only because you haven't bothered. The wall is so devilishly simple, it's like SMS messaging without the personal one-to-one communication (since everyone can read the wall posts).

My brother told me, before I got into Facebook, that FB is the future of the Internet. If it's all about being in touch with your friends, I'm looking forward to such a future!
